MarvelsourceOT activity of the day: “scissor tweezers”

OT’s love incorporating tweezers or clothes pins, or scissor tongs during Fine motor activities, however, during times like quarantine, when OT is taking place via teletherapy, many families do not have those tools. In cases like these, not to worry, just think outside of the box :)! What can we use that most families already have at home?……….

scissors!!!! Not for cutting, but for picking up!!!:) This is a great activitiy for our youngsters who are intimidated by scissors, and need a slow start.

Activity: Have child make paper balls (another great home-based DIY fine motor task), then use scissors to pick up the balls and put them into container. see video below:

Tip: A great way to increase the challenge of this task is to vary the direction of the container from time to time: i.e. place the container to the far right, while picking up paper balls in front of child. In other words, have child pick up paper balls placed in front of him, using scissors, then have him release the balls in a container placed to the right of him etc.

Tip: Have child engage in ripping up papers into small pieces, then rolling them into paper balls (bonus activity)

Skills : Hand and finger strengthening, awareness of hand muscles, bilateral integration, isolation of and practice with radial, “scissor fingers”!!!

Note: Child safety scissors and adult supervision is always best 🙂

Now go ahead and try it. Afterwards come back and share all about it 🙂 MarvelsourceOT@gmail.com

Blessings! 🙂
